Overall, it’s a hard watch at times, but Death Race 2000 is a very decent science-fiction action comedy-drama, due to the good performances, direction, script, mixed atmosphere, tense moments and some humour.Death Race 2000 and Rollerball (both 1975) show a dystopian corporate future in which the masses are appeased by bloody and ritual sports.
This has, quite rightly, become a cult movie. On the other hand, some of the violence is disturbing in places, but it is 100% part of the story, so it must be included, otherwise this film would not make any sense whatsoever. The camera stands out best in terms of the technical aspects, because it makes very good use of the locations and also captures the tense and occasional funny moments well, which get the edge-of-the-seat status.

But even when the movie isn’t funny, you can still understand what is happening, because the narrative is definitely there from beginning to end. Griffith as they make the movie good to follow and create some humour too, meaning the movie never takes itself too seriously. The script is written to a decent standard by Robert Thorn and Charles B. The direction from Bartel is very good because he allows the facial expressions to be seen to a strong effect throughout, while also keeping a mixed atmosphere happening as well.
